Over the last three years, CHPC has conducted a ground-breaking research and analysis project to re-examine the housing unit for a 21st century New York City.
In Phase 1, this research project unearthed a predominance of non-traditional households living in New York City today, struggling to fit themselves into a housing stock designed and built for the traditional household. In Phase 2, it discovered that New York City is no longer the innovator in housing quality and form; that other cities around the world are more effectively responding to new housing demand through cutting-edge housing design. In Phase 3, this project identified the key parts of New York City housing laws and codes that are currently acting as regulatory barriers to the development of several new housing types critically needed for the safety and continued prosperity of New York City.
To enable us to make the most powerful and clear argument for the revision of certain housing laws and codes, we have now launched an advocacy campaign based on the visualizations of an array of brand new housing types for New York City. The Making Room Showcase & Symposium kicked off the campaign on November 7 2011 at the Japan Society of New York. An exhibition and many public discussions throughout 2012 will continue to advocate for the re-shaping of New York City’s housing so that we can Make Room for all New Yorkers for the years to come.

This project is made possible by support from various foundations including: the Lavanburg Foundation; the Charles H. Revson Foundation; the Bank of America; and Edison Properties.
