CHPC New York

Making Room

MakingRoom-1

Over the last three years, CHPC has conducted a ground-breaking research and analysis project to re-examine the housing unit for a 21st century New York City.

In Phase 1, this research project unearthed a predominance of non-traditional households living in New York City today, struggling to fit themselves into a housing stock designed and built for the traditional household. In Phase 2, it discovered that New York City is no longer the innovator in housing quality and form; that other cities around the world are more effectively responding to new housing demand through cutting-edge housing design. In Phase 3, this project identified the key parts of New York City housing laws and codes that are currently acting as regulatory barriers to the development of several new housing types critically needed for the safety and continued prosperity of New York City.

To enable us to make the most powerful and clear argument for the revision of certain housing laws and codes, we have now launched an advocacy campaign based on the visualizations of an array of brand new housing types for New York City. The Making Room Showcase & Symposium kicked off the campaign on November 7 2011 at the Japan Society of New York. An exhibition and many public discussions throughout 2012 will continue to advocate for the  re-shaping of New York City’s housing so that we can Make Room for all New Yorkers for the years to come.

You can read about all parts of our project below.

This project is made possible by support from various foundations including: the Lavanburg Foundation; the Charles H. Revson Foundation; the Bank of America; and Edison Properties.

Making Room – Making a Splash!

The Making Room Design Showcase and Symposium was a tremendous success! Participants and attendees alike were energized by the possibilities for expanding housing types presented, and the potential for substantive change in the City's housing regulations. Making Room is also generating a lot of attention from the press.

Making Room Video!

Urban Omnibus is an online project of the Architectural League of New York; CHPC partners in the upcoming Making Room Design Challenge & Showcase Event.  The Omnibus features multi-media content to showcase design innovation, critical analysis and local expertise across a broad range of topics and locales, creating bridges between various communities of interest.

And this month, they have made a video all about Making Room! It features Jerilyn Perine,  CHPC board member Matt Blesso and a number of other housing, architecture and community development leaders, as well as items from the CHPC Marian Sameth & Ruth Dickler… Read more...

Bloomberg & Quinn announce new approach to illegal conversions

Approach to illegal conversions

Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn have announced a new approach to target illegal conversions this week.

We are delighted that it includes many of the policy proposals put forward  in CHPC’s Making Room advocacy project, including a cross-agency initiative that will result in recommendations for legal home conversions, shared housing, and micro-units.

We applaud the Mayor’s effort to address not just the enforcement issues, but the underlying problems in the housing market which CHPC has been focusing on.

Festival of Ideas for the New City

2011-05-07 13.47.47

On Saturday, the sunny Bowery was host to the StreetFest portion of the first annual Festival of Ideas for the New City; a four day initiative spearheaded by the New Museum serving as a platform for artists, architects, and designers to exchange ideas, propose solutions, create new problems, and invite the public to participate in improving urban life.

CHPC partners, the Architectural League, took up residence in a stall on Rivington Street to promote a poster campaign which takes ideas that they have featured over the past two years on their Urban Omnibus website and distills… Read more...

“Making Room”: Why Should We Care?

IMG_1709

By Jerilyn Perine and Sarah Watson
This material was derived from a speech delivered by Jerilyn Perine on September 24th, 2009 at the Japan Society as part of Citizens Housing and Planning Council’s one-day symposium, One Size Fits Some, which brought together six architects and planners from five countries to consider issues related to changing population and housing adaptations.

One of the many ironies of life in New York City is that, in a place where people are obsessed with real estate, housing, and the ensuing discussions about what people have, who has a good deal, and what they… Read more...
